At the Croix-des-Bossales market in Port-au-Prince, the market for second-hand clothes from America, called pèpè, is enormous. The majority of these garments have been donated to charities and collection centres and processed through sorting warehouses run by Haitians in Miami, where unmarketable items are discarded. Yet the worst t-shirts, those with the silliest or most offensive slogans, somehow reappear in the remote regions of Haiti thanks to this free-market miracle. Worn perhaps ironically by the Haitians portrayed in photographs by Paolo Woods, Ben Depp and Josué Azor, these trashy t-shirts could be Americas favourite means of self-expression.
