Cet ouvrage rassemble 110 poèmes du xiie au xve siècle qui constituent une part remarquable de notre patrimoine littéraire. Un livret reproduit ces poèmes dans leur langue originale : langue d'oc, langue d'oïl et français moyen.
Guillaume IX, Arnaut Daniel, Colin Muset, Rutebeuf, Adam de la Halle, Guillaume de Machaut, Christine de Pizan, Charles d'Orléans, François Villon, plus d'une cinquantaine de poètes représentent les quatre siècles fondateurs de notre poésie.
De la délicatesse des premières chansons d'amour au raffinement des ballades, cet ouvrage révèle un univers doué d'une force émotionnelle et d'une liberté d'esprit inattendues.
Dans sa préface, Michel Zink, membre de l'Institut, professeur au Collège de France, montre combien ces quatre siècles de lyrique médiévale, tout occupée d'amour, entre en résonance avec l'art chatoyant de l'extrême fin du Moyen Âge.
Issues de manuscrits précieux réalisés essentiellement aux xive et xve siècles, 200 ouvres accompagnent les 110 poèmes. Elles renforcent l'univers allégorique des poètes par la finesse des contours, l'éclat des couleurs, mêlant gothique flamboyant et raffinement courtois.
Barthélémy d'Eyck, Jean Fouquet, les frères de Limbourg, Simon Marmoin, Robinet Testard figurent parmi les grands maîtres.
Au-delà d'un répertoire iconographique original - jardins de Déduit, châteaux d'Amour, offrandes de Cour - ces peintures témoignent de la créativité et du talent des artistes du Moyen Âge.
Ce livre allie l'émotion de la poésie et les richesses de la peinture médiévale.
