"Entre-Deux" was born of a desire to collaborate on a book project with Genevieve Hafner, a young French photographer exiled in New York for almost 15 years.

When it came to working together, the idea grew of an intimate correspondence between Paris and New York, between her images and my words. This work would have all the elements of a conversation, but would allow each of us our own special language, our most personal form of expression.

Thus, "Entre-Deux" was born. With this first edition of what I hope will be the beginning of a collection, similar dialogues of complicity will be established between all the great metropolitan centers of the world. They will link writers and artists, whether they be photographers, illustrators, calligraphers or other visual artists. The only condition is that their exchange must expose the lifeblood of these cities, touching on the very pulse of our suffocating, all-invasive, but fantastical urban, human existence.

The rules of the game are simple. On a set date every month, write a letter distilling the essence of the season, and referring to a contemporary topic. It’s all in the telling. The answer asked of the counterpart should respond in kind through images and emotions. It’s all in the seeing.

Fourteen letters and fourteen images make up this book. That’s a little bit longer than a year. It allows for the passage of time in order to capture the character of the cities, in keeping with developments in current affairs and with the rhythms of the seasons. It’s also a matter of alchemy for me. Multiple of seven seem to govern the destiny of V.I.T.R.I.O.L., the "agency of conviction" that is now turning itself into a publishing house. Note that the first letter is dated July 7th, 2000, proof that we are not in the habit of letting luck pass us by.
