The coleopteran Suborder Adephaga contains several aquatic families, the so-called Hydradephaga. Adaptations of adults resulted in striking similarities across families, while larval morphology and mode of life are more divergent. Today, the monophyly of the Hydradephaga as a whole and the interrelationships of the various aquatic adephagan families are under discussion. Two of the three farmlies deal with in the present issue were for a long time recognised äs distinct, while until recently the Noteridae were erroneously included among Dytiscidae. The present volume covers not only the central European species, but is the most comprehensive treatment of the entire European fauna yet available. Keys to and illustrated descriptions of all European species of Haliptidae, Hygrobiidae and Noteridae are presented. The key to species of haliplid larvae includes only the central European taxa, which is an advancement over existing studies. In addition, available literature on larvae of all European Haliplidae is tabulated. A synopsis of information on morphology, anatomy and biology of both adult and pre-imaginal stages is presented, rendering the present issue a complete treatment of these fascinating beetles inhabiting pools, lakes and bodies of running water.
