The correspondence conducted between Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900-2002) and Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) from 1922 to 1976 and relatively fully preserved documents the five and a half decades of personal and philosophical relationship between the two thinkers. Supported by a commentary, in which the numerous references to persons, texts, circumstances and backgrounds are carefully explored, the reader can follow up close the development of the initial teacher-student relationship to a close collegial and friendly relationship and participate as a listener in the conversation in which philosophical and philological questions have been touched upon as well as publication and lecture proposals. Last but not least, this letter exchange reflects in a unique way the political events that led from the Weimar Republic via the "Third Reich" to the time of occupation and the young Federal Republic of Germany. The body of the letters is rounded off by an appendix, the additional insightful and here partly first published documents, including Heidegger's expertise on Gadamer's habilitation writing and the records that Heidegger based his address to the last official lecture of Gadamer.
