This compendium to the author's History of the Karaites is an alphabetical encyclopedia of all matters Karaite, listing not only most Karaites of importance, such as political and communal leaders and philosophers, grammarians, exegetes and other thinkers and writers, but also the main modern scholars who have left their mark on Karaite studies; further the main countries and cities in which Karaite communities have existed; the main Karaite religious customs and festivals; the relations to Judaism, Islam and Christianity and to such sects as the Samaritans, Essenes, Sadducees and Falashas; the influence of the Dead Sea Scrolls or the Khazars on their development; such Karaite terms as 'Edah or Ha'atakah and general articles on their demography, or philosophy and exegesis.

Nathan Schur was born in Vienna in 1923 and came to Israel in 1934. He has studied history, geography and archeology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has published numerous books and articles about the history of the Holy Land and Jewish history. His three volume «History of Jerusalem» has been published in Hebrew in 1987.
