Synopsis

Although glass was the only lens material for over 600 years, today plastic lenses used for prescription eyewear and sunglasses requiring high abrasion resistance and high quality optical properties have been developed. High index plastic lenses are a new lens category, having refractive index from 1.54 to 1.71. Recently, much interest has been shown in new high index polymeric materials. Main target is lenses with good optical performance; high refractive index, low constringence, good light transmission and UV absorption. Outstanding factors defining this performance are refractive index and chromatic aberration. This book, therefore, provides measurements of refractive index using a light source or a laser beam and computing the minimum deviation angle through a prism of the material, chromatic aberration determined by evaluating the optical performance of the material itself. It should be especially useful to professionals in industrial, educational and marketing fields, or anyone else who may be interesting in measurement techniques, properties or performance of new optical materials
