The fascinating ability to control molecular orientation by light has drawn many attentions for the last decade. In fact it enables large opportunities to design materials with controllable properties and use it to create new electro-optical devices. This book dwells upon the physical mechanism leading to photo orientation of molecules, also known as photoalignment. The problem is addressed as statistical average of the sequence of independent events on photo-dissociation and self-association of reversible intermolecular bonds (e.g. H-bonds), which enable and disable self-consistency condition for molecular relaxation in long range Mean field potential. Feasible theoretical description is verified in original experiments on photo orientation of molecules of dyes and dye mixtures. Novel considerations shed light on the functional role of specific radical groups and give hint of new chemical structures of photoalignment materials for optically rewritable electronic paper and photonics devices described here. The book should be useful to professionals in Condensed matter theory and chemistry, or anyone else who may be considering utilizing photoalignment for molecular orientation.
