XML Information Retrieval: Approaches, Relevance and Evaluation

9783639221985: XML Information Retrieval: Approaches, Relevance and Evaluation

XML is being adopted as a common storage format in scientific data repositories, digital libraries, and on the World Wide Web. As such, there is a need for information retrieval systems that can efficiently and effectively store, search and retrieve information from XML document collections. To evaluate the effectiveness of such systems, test collections are necessary. Such test collections have been built by INEX, the Initiative for the Evaluation of XML retrieval. In this book, we address several fundamental questions surrounding the field of XML information retrieval. In particular, we focus on how information retrieval and database approaches could be combined for effective XML retrieval; how relevance should be defined in XML retrieval; how the effectiveness of XML retrieval systems should be evaluated; and how information retrieval from XML document collections could be used in different application scenarios. The analysis presented in the book should be especially useful to academics and professionals in the Information Retrieval and Native XML Database fields, or anyone else who may be interested in the development of future interactive search systems.

From the Author:

Dear readers,

This book is largely based on my PhD thesis "Evaluation of Effective XML Information Retrieval", published by RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia in 2006. In addition to the thesis content, the book also contains research material that I published in various scientific publications since 2006, which resulted in updated and expanded versions of Chapter 1 (Introduction), Chapter 2 (XML Information Retrieval), Chapter 5 (Evaluation of XML Retrieval) and Chapter 7 (Conclusions and Future Work). Overall, it took more than 7 years and several missed deadlines with the publisher to finish this edition of the book.

The PhD thesis underlying this book received the following acclaim (written by one of the thesis external examiners, and used here with permission):

Jovan Pehcevski has demonstrated convincingly his capacity for carrying out independent and original research. This thesis demonstrates critical insight to a satisfactory level. The author's work has contributed to the understanding of XML information retrieval, and his views have been received well in the community. Several parts of the book have already been published in journals and conference proceedings.

The book is mainly intended for academics and professionals working in Information Retrieval (IR) and native XML database research fields, although it could also be used as a companion to various database and IR-related courses. Whichever the purpose, I do hope you will find it useful.

Sincerely yours,

Jovan Pehcevski
