This volume shows that activation of these cell types by, respectively, mitogenic lectins and exogenous ATP, initiates similar patterns of change in ion transport. In both, calcium mobilization is mediated by IP3 while calcium entry from the medium occurs via receptor-operated calcium channels, for which a number of important common properties are shown. The stimulus-induced pHi signal is not mediated by protein kinase C in either cell type and is also negatively regulated by cAMP and intracellular ATP-dependent. In thymocytes the mitogen-induced ionic responses are independent of stimulus concentration, whereas in Erlich cells evidence is presented of different signal transduction pathways activated by low and high doses of exogenous ATP.
