Around the end of May 1972, a conference on Approximation Theory was organized at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. The participants came from all parts of Canada, the United States and Europe. Since the majority of the talks were related to the theory of spline functions, we decided to let this volume of the Proceedings of the conference be entitled "Spline Functions and Approximation Theory."
