"Landscape architecture's potential does not lie in a unified profession, but in polarization." This key idea of author Thies Schröder is reflected in the diverse approaches of the 14 offices whose work we now present in updated portraits of improved quality. Reactions to Changes in Scenery: "Thies Schröder's book shows us that we are at a very specific moment of change and exchange in the history of European landschape architecture." Christophe Girot, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology "...altogether a refreshing read ... it is to be hoped that it will find an audience outside landscape architecture circles." TOPOS "For all who are curious to see landscapes as art and for all who are looking for inspiration." The Single Family Home "These are no longer gardens as we have hitherto known them." FAZ

Europe's rapidly changing urban landscape is influencing design throughout the world, and these two surveys examine the thinking behind some recent developments there. In Changes in Scenery, Schroder, a German critic and lecturer in landscape architecture, has gathered recent work by 14 firms from Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Besides selecting and arranging plant material, these firms have integrated sculpture, plazas, walls, pools, and bridges into their projects, which vary in scale and purpose from a monastery garden to high-speed transportation corridors. Schroder's lucid text analyzes the approach of each firm, emphasizing themes in subheadings such as "Contemplative Dymanics" (in a chapter on Stig L. Anderson) and "Constructing Physical Nature" (on Latz & Partner). Unfortunately, half the illustrations are black-and-white photographs that don't do justice to the content.
