This book, first published in Germany in 1969, has recently been translated into English. It immediately begs the question of whether a special book is needed in paediatic homoeopathy. Dr Imhauser answers this herself, saying that while children's diseases are not of a different nature from those of adults, drug selection has to be based on more exact observation of objective characteristics than on subjective symptoms. I would add that in some places in the repertories special mention is made of drugs useful for children, e.g. Convulsions, children, Kent, but more often there is no guidance. Yet anyone with experience of children knows that certain drugs are more useful than others. Which books give that advice? In Europe there are several books devoted to children but in the English language there is only Borlands Childrens Types. While this booklet gives fascinating insights into constitutional pictures, it is not so useful when a quick decision is needed in a clinic for a child, for example, with a rattling cough. Dr Imhauser's book does not, of course, replace the classic repertories but a glance at the chapter on Diseases of Respiratory Organs, and the sub-heading 'Rattling Cough' reveals a list of six common remedies with brief differentiating symptoms. Dr Imhauser evidently has a wealth of practical experience and this is an essentially practical guide. It would be useful for anyone in homoeopathy dealing with children.
