The works of Philipp Otto Runge were of central importance for the development of German Romanticism. Because Runge sought a renewal of art through his work, he served as a role model to many. His theory of color was not only of relevance for the artists at the Bauhaus, but was reflected upon again and again well into the 20th Century. This extensive catalog illustrates from a new perspective the forked path Runge took to create his work. Completely new insights into Runge's way of working are brought about by a project funded by the Philipp Otto Runge Stiftung that is dedicated to the study of the techniques of some of his major works.
