Synopsis

This ground-breaking volume gives readers an overview of Robert Wilson's work as a visual artist, documenting his work in stunning illustrations and informative texts for the very first time. Robert Wilson, the theatrical genius, has been fascinating audiences with exciting, often enigmatic productions since the 1970s. Although best known for his unparalleled work in theatre, Wilson has also captured the imagination of the art world and has won numerous awards for his exhibitions, including the coveted Golden Lion for sculpture, which he received for his installation "Memory/Loss" at the Venice Bienniale in 1993. The first part of "Robert Wilson" introduces the artist's work in detail, illustrated with photographs of the artist's eye-catching installations, both indoor and outdoor. The second section is devoted to his latest project, a dazzling series of 12 illustrations, which he calls tableaux, in the historic rooms of Munich's Villa Stuck, the former residence of the artist and sculptor Franz von Stuck (1863-1928). For the past four years, Wilson has studied the painting, photography, architecture, furniture and even the lifestyle of Munich's famous artist in order to produce this spectacular "experience" of Franz von Stuck's world and the vibrant world of his pictures. "Robert Wilson" concludes with a comprehensive, illustrated documentation of his solo and group exhibitions.

Reviews

Wilson, who was recently in the news for a controversial production of Lohengrin at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, is well known for his visionary theater works, e.g., Einstein on the Beach. But for more than three decades the Texas native has also been producing visual art, especially sculpture and installations, though, like his theater, they are more often seen in Europe. This slim but satisfying book opens with a review of Wilson's career as an artist, mixing an essay on his working methods with pictures from a half-dozen important shows. The second half offers detailed documentation of 12 "tableaux" created for Munich's Villa Stuck. This simple catalog on the sometimes enigmatic but always entertaining American artist, should be popular in medium and large public libraries with an interest in either art or theater.?Eric Bryant, "Library Journal"
