Synopsis

Double-skin facades have been increasingly used in German architecture over the last decade as they permit natural ventilation while keeping unwanted noise, rain and wind out of a building. This functions in a similar way to box windows, as the initial overview in Types of Construction shows for some built examples. Questions and Answers and Ten Planning Steps give an initial summary of the most common aspects. As modern, low-energy buildings require good thermal insulation in winter and in summer, the possibility of rain-protected, night-time ventilation, wind-protected sun blinds and variable heat transfer is welcome - and not only for high-rise buildings. In-depth descriptions of the main effects of Sound and Thermal Insulation are given in specialized chapters as well as factors to be considered with regard to Aerophysics and Tall Buildings. Other topics such as Daylight and Fire Protection are touched on in brief.
As the outer skin influences the investment and the look of a building significantly, room has been given to the Special Characteristics of Facade Construction and related Special Constructional Details, each with built examples and constructional drawings. In the same way related Air-Conditioning is discussed, all important aspects for the final discussion on how to achieve Economic Viability have been brought together for rapid reference. All chapters are presented with basic equations, diagrams or nomograms for fast application as well as measured or simulated performance data, detailed photos or CAD-drawings.

The Authors: Eberhard Oesterle is managing partner of the neginerring office DS-Plan. He works as an engineering consultant specializing in the energy optimization of buildings. He is the author of numerous publications and holds an honorary professorship at the University of Stuttgart.

Rolf-Dieter Lieb is an engineering consultant specializing ub aerophysics and building physics as well as in energy management at DS-Plan.

Martin Lutz is an architect and managing partner at DS-Plan. He has designed several new facade developments.

Winfried Heusler is director for aluminum technology at the Schco concern. He has been responsible for many fundamental developmetns and has written widely on the subject.
