Unlike any other photographer, Boris Carmi (1914-2002) succeeded in capturing the essence of Israeli society from its very beginning in images that never fail to surprise. He was one of the founding fathers of photojournalism in a new-born country, focussing on scenes of everyday life, and portraits of the country's cultural elite. In the midst of conflict, however, it was the ordinary people who interested Carmi most.

First Edition. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dw, now mylar-sleeved. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered.; 111 pages; Description: 111 p. : ill. ; 31 cm. Published on the occasion of the exhibition "Boris Carmi - Fotografien aus Israel" held at the Akademie der Kunste, Berlin from May 15 through June 27, 2004. Subjects: Israelis --Portraits --Photography, Artistic --Israel --Pictorial works. Summary: The first photographic retrospective of one of the pioneers of Israeli photojournalism, this beautiful collection of black and white images by Boris Carmi is also a stirring narrative of Israeli life in the second half of the twentieth century. Spanning the final years of the British mandate, a wave of European immigrants, the War of Independence, and the deportation of Palestinian refugees, Boris Carmi's work is characterized by its focus on human portrayal. The nearly one hundred photographs in this monograph make no overt political statement, but document life in a country riven by ethnic and social tension. Consequently, his war pictures, his portraits of artists and politicians, and his images of Israel's beautiful women retain a powerful universal message of human dignity, and an unflagging optimism that speaks volumes. 1 Kg.
