Reviews

Gr 2–5—This title encourages readers to search for colors, shapes, figures, and patterns in a well-selected array of great artworks. Among the offerings here are pieces by Grant Wood, Canaletto, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Jackson Pollock, Robert Delaunay, Paul Signac, and many others, including one of the unicorn tapestries and a modern Australian native piece called Emu Dreaming. Like its predecessor, The Art Treasure Hunt (Prestel, 2012), also by Kutschbach, this book is large, splendid, and challenging, and adults may well be called in to assist in the hunt for something green (actually, the palest mint green) or to help define "crayfish" and "gondolas." The smallest items in the book are, unfortunately, the pictures in the answer key; these are difficult to decode. The largest item is a glorious four-page foldout of one of Henri Matisse's enchanting compositions. Leave this volume out in the classroom or living room; young explorers will find their way to it.—Susan Weitz, formerly at Spencer-Van Etten School District, Spencer, NY
