Synopsis
Each of Thomas Struth's "paradises" is a piece of nature devoted to a specific overarching theme. In his photographs measuring up to 9 by 11 feet in size, Struth draws the viewer into the magical semidarkness of forests and jungles, the impenetrable and yet bright green of the trees, bushes, and undergrowth, of tropical plants, rampant jungle vegetation, and mossy brooks. Struth found his paradises in China, Japan, Australia, Brazil, and Germany, where he discovered suitable material in the forests of Bavaria.
This book contains the entire series of 25 photographs as full-page plates. In their essays, psychologist Ingo Hartmann and art historian Hans Rudolf Reust each shed light from their own particular angle on our current understanding of so-called untamed nature, its exploitation and mystification, not to mention as a basis for utopias.

About the Author
Thomas Struth, born in Geldern, Germany, in 1954, studied with the Bechers at the Dusseldorf Academy of Art. Starting in the 80s, Struth is today a leading figure in German arts and international photography.
Hans Rudolf Reust, born in 1957, is an art critic and the head of the art department at the Hochschule fur Gestaltung in Berne, Switzerland.
Ingo Hartmann (1941-2003) was a psychologist and therapist. He was the founding president of Forum Futurum, a research organization specializing on sex and the arts.

Around 1996, Struth formulated a plan for the Paradise pictures, to the extent of already envisaging an installation with several works surrounding the viewer. He began to research forests and jungles around the world, using trips to China, Japan and Australia, often scheduled for other reasons, to seek out possible locations. The first eight of the Paradise pictures were made in the tropical rainforest in Daintree in the northeast of Australia in 1998.
