Book Description Ugarit-Verlag. Hardcover/Hardback. Book Condition: New. ?Slipper coffins,? Pantoffelsarkophage, are caskets made of fired clay designed like a tube with an oval opening at the head end. The term was originally coined for blue-green glazed and plastically decorated coffins in Mesopotamia during the Parthian dynasty of the Arsacides (247 B.C.?224 A.D.). This study is based on examination of ca 1,500 coffins that have been assembled together here for the first time comprehensively from Babylon, Nippur, Seleukia, Uruk, and other sites. Thus, new information concerning their production, the motifs of their decoration and of related funerary traditions is obtained. The term slipper coffin is also used for similar designed coffins from other regions from Egypt to Central Asia. These have been taken into consideration as well because of their obvious correlation with Pantoffelsarkophage. The study is extensively illustrated, including many hitherto unpublished excavation photographs. Bookseller Inventory # RICPARTHI
