To understand the life of any group, we must place it in context. The dialectic of social life is such, however, that we must always keep in mind that roles, groups, and values also exist in contrast to other roles, groups, and values. The distinctions and contrasts, for example, which the Mbowamb, the dramatis personae of this book, make between the sexes help explain much of Mbowamb behavior.

This book, therefore, is a description of Mbowamb life and culture from the perspective of context and contrast. The emphasis is on marriage, family life, and kinship.

Our attempts to understand the culture of the Mbowamb will help us see our own in a different light. Our own ways also become more explicit, and therefore more manageable. As we see how other groups live and act, we also can appreciate "what might have been" had we ourselves lived in another cultural context.
