This is a unique CD-ROM, a disturbing CD-ROM. It offers a photographic documentary chronicling a portion of America that is largely unseen and seemingly left behind in the much ballyhooed economic good times in which we live. It tells the story of a Bronx couple, both HIV-positive, their children, how they survive (or not), fight, love, separate, reunite, run away, and self-destruct over a seven-year period. The core of the disc is the series of photographs by Steve Hart, supplemented by interviews with the main participants, the photographer, and social service professionals. This is a portrait of a group that does not fit the stereotypical version of the American family, yet needs to deal with the same pressures as all families. The photographs do not re-create all daily activities; there is little or nothing on shopping, eating, schooling, so we do not get a comprehensive view of the family's life. Bottom Line: Although there were times when we felt that the photographer inserted himself into the story unnecessarily, this is still a devastating portrait. Depending on your perspective, you may find it depressing or potentially uplifting to watch this struggle. Recommended for all libraries that collect in photography and current affairs.
