Mal jährt, erstmals nach Deutschland. 1913 hatte der indische Lyriker, Dramatiker und Erzähler, der auch als Komponist und Maler so wie Bildungs- und Sozialreformer hervortrat, den Nobelpreis für Literatur erhalten. Das Interesse an dem »Gast aus einer höheren, geistigeren Welt« war groß. Tagore beeindruckte durch Klarheit, Präsenz und Offenheit. Doch mancher reagierte mit Spott und Unverständnis auf den Mann, der sich auch in Europa nicht europäisch kleidete. Auf drei Reisen durch Deutschland lernte Tagore seine deutsche Übersetzerin kennen, mit der ihn eine wechselseitige Hochachtung verband, und begegnete Persönlichkeiten wie Thomas Mann, Stefan Zweig, Martin Buber, Albert Einstein und seinem Verleger Kurt Wolff.
