Walter Sawatsky is professor of Church History and Mission and Director of the Mission Studies Center at the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart (Indiana/USA). He is also editor of Mission Focus and co-editor of Religion in Eastern Europe .Review:
Walter Sawatsky's article, Centrality of Mission and Evangelism in the Slavic Evangelical Story, on the success and failure of the Co-Mission Project in the context of the historic background of the Church in Russia, is especially relevant here. It is a must read for Western missionaries interested in missions in and to the CIS. Furthermore, Sawatsky and Penner argue that dia-logue on mission inside the CIS and among all the chur-ches involved in mission (Sawatsky), as well as with the foreign missionary agencies (Penner) is imperative, if the transformation of missions in the region is to suc-ceed at all. I could not agree more! ... All in all, the volume offers a good analytical tool, which will help to understand the genesis and direction of what has been called post-Perestroika missions in the CIS. All those interested in this part of God's story with His people ought to read the book. --Johannes Reimer, D Th, Professor Extraordinarius, Department of Missiology, University of South Africa (UNISA), in: Missionalie (Journal of the University of South Africa)
Overall, this is an excellent book, with much to offer those in ministry as well as those interested in God s work in the FSU. The historical information is very helpful as is the critique on mission work over the past 15 years. Westerners read-ing this book should gain an appreciation for all that the national church has done over the past two centuries. Nationals should be encouraged to further develop contextualized ministries, seeking healthy, two-way partnerships with the West. This book offers much food for thought for the coming years of mission in the FSU. --John E. White, Donetsk Christian University, Ukraine, in: RELIGION IN EASTERN EUROPE XXVI, 3 (August 2006) page 63
