Synopsis

From 1979 to 1991, around 20,000 contract workers from Mozambique were employed in the GDR.
Their four-year stay should serve to provide them with training and gain work experience to contribute to the construction of an independent socialist Mozambique upon their return.

The reality looked different. The "Madgermanes", as they are called in Mozambique, a word creation
from "Crazy Germans" and "Made in Germany", returned to a country completely destroyed by the Civil War. There was no use for their vocational training, and the wage retained by the government in fiduciary was never paid out...

Birgit Weyhe researches this barely known footnote of German-Mozambican history by letting the affected people have their own word. It turns the usual perspective of a German view of the world and at the same time portrays a state before its demise.

By subtle insertion of objects of memory and enriched with allegorical motifs, a comic was created that crosses the boundaries between African and European culture in its pictorial and narrative language.
