Synopsis

The Augsburg painter Johann Moritz Rugendas reached Latin America in 1837 together with the painter Robert Krause. As a landscape and nature painter, he is said to support the explorer's research through illustrations. On the way from Chile to Buenos Aires, they pass a scary tract of land, soon a night-black thunderstorm rises and unloads over them. Rugendas is hit by lightning. He survives, but he gets caught in the stirrup and the frightened horse breaks out and grinds him with him. He also survives this ordeal, but his face is disfigured in the most terrible. From now on, in the morphine rush to endure the pain, he paints pictures of stunning force. On his hunt for increasingly spectacular motifs, he dares one day to the centre of a real Indian, but this time his obsession seems to go too far.
