The Toledos, a Cuban-born husband-and-wife team, collaborated on this book, which accompanies an exhibition at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology. Ruben takes garments created in the 1980s and 1990s by avant-garde designer Isabel and juxtaposes them against his own drawings and paintings. Isabel's designs consist of uniquely constructed fashions with exaggerated details executed in fabrics that drape or flow in unusual ways. Six stylized groupings are offered: "Suspension" incorporates designs that hang; "Organic Chemistry" offers clothing constructions comprising geometric patterns; the designs in "Monastic Nomads" show voluminous body drapes; "Shadow" shows projects using lace and netting extensively; "Liquid Architecture" includes flowing jersey dresses; and "Shape" is interpreted with billowing sleeves and poncho-like garments. Ruben's artistic interpretations in various media highlight the stylistic exaggerations of the fashions. Recommended for specialized collections.AJudith Yankeilun Lind, Roseland Free P.L., NJ
