Igor' Grabar' (1871-1960) was an artist and a historian of art, the patron of the famous Tretyakov Galery in Moscow since 1913, compiler and editor of the monumental work 'The History of Russian Art', and later the director of the State Restoration Workshop and of the Institute of Arts of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This book consists of two. The first, Automonograph, first published in 1937, combines features of both autobiography and monograph. The second part includes Grabar's articles about Russian artists: Feofan Grek, Fedor Alekseev, Ilya Repin, Valentin Serov, Mikhail Vrubel', Sergei Maliugin, and about exhibitions and artistic groups.
