It is a sorrowful reflection on the state of Europe at the beginning of WWII. One translation of the title is "The Way of All Earth." This edition appears to be annotated. Akhmatova (1889 - 1966) is considered one of the great Russian poets of the 20th century. She was a contemporary of Boris Pasternak, Osip Mandelstam, Alexander Blok, and Marina Tsetaeva.
