The first collection of articles by Russian, Estonian and Swedish authors about Ivangorod fortress, one of the best monuments of ancient Russian architecture. The fortress was founded more than 500 years ago on the Russian border and named by some historians "the first window to Europe". Ivangorod was located on the Hanseatic League line, a trade route which connected Ancient Russia with West European countries. During World War II the fortress was destroyed to a considerable extent. Investigations and restoration work have had two phases; the second (1964-1994) was especially important. This book gives a more precise definition of chronology, new material about the Italian architect Petrok Malyi's (Hannibal) work in Ivangorod and previously unpublished pictures and drafts. Supplement (chronology). List of illustrations. Bibliography. Abstracts in English.
