Un campione di 61 detenuti, il 25% dei quali č stato selezionato mediante un semplice campionamento casuale, ha dimostrato che la malattia parodontale č stata riscontrata soprattutto in pazienti con bassi livelli di istruzione, il 57,4% dei quali nelle scuole secondarie, con fattori di rischio predominanti: Carie dentali (60,7%), denti persi non restaurati (57,4%) e fumo (49,2%), oltre ad alcune malattie correlate come il diabete mellito (9,8%) e l'artrite reumatoide (6,6%).
