By taking the father Tong Shuangwei and his son Tong Jiating's wandering whereabouts as the clue, the book displays the social life from Xi'an incident in December, 1936 to the end of the anti-Japanese war and also the beginning of civil war around March, 1946. The heroes wandered across more than half of Chinese places except for the enemy-occupied places and places suffering from civil war. The book stands out for its epic structure and epic style.
