During the last decades of the previous century, the author traveled to the various little explored regions of China, a journey of over forty thousand kilometers. In this book, the author set out to comprehensively record the discovery of three major regions of distribution of human face petroglyphs, and supplement it with analyses of petroglyphic features, fabrication methods, and their spatial and temporal evolution. The author also ventured to discuss how they influenced prehistoric pottery patterns, the development of the first Chinese writing system, the bronze vessel patterns of the Shang and Zhou dynasties, and the formation of ancient Chinese mythology and religious practices. Together, these findings reveal that the human face petroglyph is one of the original resources of Chinese cultural heritage. The traditional Chinese concept of Heaven and Man are one, and the practice of ancestor veneration, both spring from concepts first embodied in these prehistoric human faces. The book includes several hundreds images which serve to give the reader an impression of this 40000-kilometer journey from the eastern coast to the western deserts, from the northern grasslands to the tropical forests of the south. Many of the images are photographs taken painstakingly by the author during the research journey.
