Frederic Henry, an American young man, goes to North Italy and works as a volunteer ambulance driver in the Red Cross during World War I. When carrying out a task, Henry is injured and sent to Milan Hospital. During the treatment, he is taken good care of by Catherine, a nurse from Britain and falls in love with her. After recovery, Henry goes back to the battlefield. When retreat with the Itralian Army, he witness the cruelty of war. Therefore, he leaves the army and goes to Switchland with Cathrine. Afterwards, Catherine dies in childbirth. According to his personal experiences, Hemingway composed an elegy for war and love. As a classic of modern literature, the novel was adapted to films for several times.
