Huang Tingjian (1045-1105) was born in Fenning Hongzhou, an ancient place of todays Xiushui in Jiangxi province. As a famous poet and calligrapher in Song Dynasty, He also styled himself as Luzhi, Valley Taoist, Fu Weng, Qianan Hermit, and An Old of Bagui. He won the third-class Jin-shi in the imperial exa mination in the 4th year in the 4th year of PingZhi period. Then he was appointed as a county commissioner, and later a teacher in Imperial Academy. However, in the reign of Zhe Zong, he was demoted to Fuzhou and then Qianzhou because of his failure in compiling the Biography of Emperor Shen Zong. He was the founder of Jiangxi Poetry School, and his masterpiece was Poems of the Valley Taoist. He was born in a literary family, and was very clever. Tough only five, he could recite the Four Books and the Five Classics fluently. He created the famous poemA Cowboy at his seven, and the contents are as follows-- Riding across the village on a cow, Listening from the river of his flute, However rich and powerful position are provided, wont exchange the quiet life he had. With the influence by Yan Zhenqing, Liu Gongquan, Huai Su and Yang Ningshi in calligraphy, as well as the research of his favorite work of Epitaph of Crane by Tao Hong-jing in the Southern Dynasty, he created a particular calligraphic style. Su Shi, Mi Fei, Cai Xiang and he are called the Greatest Four of Song Dynasty. Once there Su Shi and he was an interesting talk between them. One day, the two greats talked about their handwritings, Su Sing said that Huangs scripts are thin like snakes on a tree; while Huang said that Sus script was like a frog under a stone. Their talk shows vividly the features of their handwritings. It was recorded in the History of Song Dynasty that his achievements in poets were due to the enlightenment of Du Fu; while those in cursive and regular scripts are from his researches of all famous calligraphic Schools. Zhang Lei, Chao Bu-zhi, Qin Guan and he were four famous students of Su shi. Once he said that his had took more than 30 years to practice cursive scripts, but the first 20-year study with Zhou Yue was a false choice. He got great achievement by learning the styles of Su Shi, as well as Zhang Chang-shi, Zeng Huaisu and Gao Xian. Huang Ting Jian is famous for his Cursive and running scripts; even his regular scripts also had a little running style. He had only a few of regular characters left nowadays, such as Stele of Shuitou Caldron, Epitaph of Xu Chunzhong and Stele of Di Ren-jie. His characters are all low in the left and high in the right, with a vigorous, smooth and changeable style.
