This book creates an everyday hero in the history of human literature. An old Cuban fisherman Santiago gets nothing during the 84 days since he going out for fishing. But he does not give up and gets a big fish at last. After three days of combating with the fish, he kills and ties it to one side of the boat. On the way home, sharks attack the fish constantly. When he arrives at the port, there is only a fish spine and tail left. Hemingway compared his creation in literature to iceberg and generalizes his own style and skills in artistic creation vividly with the principle of iceberg. He once put it this way: I always try to write according to the principle of iceberg, seven-eighths of the section showing is under the water. You can leave out everything you know, which only thickens your iceberg that does not show. Yet in The Old Man and the Sea his concise writing and subconscious metaphor was expressed to the full. On the vast sea, a lonely old man, a painstaking combat, a failing but glorious hero, etc., tell us that a man can be destroyed but cannot be beaten.
