Synopsis
Between 1903 and 1908 Rainer Maria Rilke wrote ten letters to Franz Kappus, a student who entered the military profession during the course of his correspondence with the already-famous poet. These are of course the Letters to a Young Poet, first published in 1929, most recently translated into English by Stephen Mitchell (1984). If in one sense a poetry workshop is a kind of cult―"an exclusive group of persons sharing an esoteric interest"― the Letters has become a cultic classic, an object of devotion and veneration in workshops across the country. It shouldn't be. For the contemporary young poet Rilke's book, although written out of an exemplary sincerity, is often misleading, and even dangerous.
