Synopsis

About The Book -: Excerpt from Travels From India to Comprehending a Visit to the Burman Empire, and a Journey Through Persia, Asia Minor, European Turkey, &C. In the Years 1825-26. It would have been easy for the author to have extended his work, and rendered it, in the estimation probably of some readers, more interesting, by incorporating with his own narrative facts borrowed from preceding travellers; but he has carefully abstained from so doing; Acting not merely upon his own judgment, but upon that of others, he has confined himself to a simple statement of the occur rences and remarks which he daily committed to his journal on his route. If, therefore, the reader regrets the absence of copious and elaborate disquisitions upon history, antiquitie and manners, he may console himself with the. Assurance that the author has recorded what he knows to be true from actual observation, and the evidence of his senses. He might have infused more apparent learning into his work Without augmenting its value, and increased its bulk without adding to its interest. About The Author -: General Sir James Edward Alexander (1803 – 1885) was a Scottish traveller, author and soldier in the British Army. Alexander was the driving force behind the placement of Cleopatra's Needle on the Thames Embankment. He received his training in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. In 1853 he obtained Westerton House in Bridge of Allan, built in 1803 by Dr John Henderson of the East India Company (a cousin and friend). Here he became an elder of Logie Kirk, walking there each Sunday. His other works include Travels from India to comprehending a visit to the Burman empire, and a journey through Persia, Asia Minor, European Turkey, &c. In the years 1825-26.
