Originating in India more than 5,000 years ago, Ayurveda is the oldest system of healing. At the heart of Ayurveda is the intimate connection between our individual body constitution, our doshas, and the five essential elements of mother nature ether, air, fire, water, and earth; maintaining a balance among these elements is the key to our physical and spiritual well-being. Because Ayurveda considers food an integral part of its healing process, some of the oldest and most time-tested principles of healthy eating originated in it. It divides food into six essential tastes and explains how these influence our doshas, our constitution.
To help balance your unique constitution with food, each of the 150 recipes is tagged to indicate whether it increases or pacifies a particular dosha. The result is a harmony in constitution and a sense of holistic health. Most recipes use whole grains and fresh foods rather than processed foods, which are considered toxic, or tamasic. And while all recipes are created according to the traditional Ayurvedic principles they feature easy-to-find ingredients and modern-day cooking methods appropriate for busy lifestyles. The book also introduces you to eating differently according to the season. A simple twelve-day detox menu to cleanse the body of toxins and improve the absorption of nutrients is also included. Determine your primary and secondary doshas. Test questionnaire included.

Review:

In front of me is a new vegetarian cookbook: The Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook. Ayurvedic is a big word that may turn casual readers away, but for serious foodies seeking soothing and healing recipes, vegans and those who are into holistic health, this one works.... It's a friendly cookbook that anyone can use and appreciate, including those who just enjoy cooking and those who simply love Indian vegetarian cuisine.
The Dining Out Guide (The Dining Out Guide)

I am pleased that Amrita Sondhi has written such a wonderful book! Not only as a cookbook, but also as a valuable resource and as a comprehensive introduction to the profound health science of Ayurveda, I heartily recommend this book! The recipes are tasty and easy to prepare, and the appendices offer important information on yoga-asana, aromatherapy, color therapy, and detailed menu plans, making it one of the most user friendly books about Ayurveda I know.
—Frank Jude Boccio, Ayurvedic Practitioner and author of Mindfulness Yoga: The Awakened Union of Breath, Body and Mind (Frank Jude Boccio)

The Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook will make a welcome and impressive addition to personal and community cookbook collections.
Midwest Book Review (Midwest Book Review)

Curve (Curve 2007-07-24)

What a delightful, delicious book this is. A book designed for truly nourishing your individual bodies and ensuring that everyone you cook for leaves the table feeling good, centred, and as Amrita says, "joyful."
