Book Description New Age International (P) Limited, 1998. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. 2nd edition. There are Hindus and Hindus. There are armchair philosophers for whom many practices of the religion do not make sense. There are rationalists and scientists who are not fascinated by Avataras. Recitations of names of God. Surrender of one`s will to God and the like. But these very concepts constitute the life and ideal of an orthodox Hindu, who however tends to be dogmatic, mostly because his attitude lacks the conviction about the eclectic under-current of Hinduism. The thesis of `The Ten Commandments of Hinduism` is that a complete understanding of the religion comes only from an integrated perception of as many as ten facets, which are enunciated, here for the first time, in the form of ten scriptural commandments. To establish this the author dissects each one of these and presents provocative and comprehensive discussions, supported profusely by scriptural quotations, over a wide spectrum of viewpoints-philosophical, experimental, logical, psychological, analytic, emotional, ritualistic, dialectical, scholarly, operational, traditional and modern. Among the scriptural selections, that are elaborated are: Vishnu Sahasra-namam and Sanat-sujatiyam for the Mahabharata; Vibhishana`s surrender and Rama-Bharata debate from the Ramayana; episodes of Prahlada and Ajamila form the Bhagavatam; the Surya-namaskara chapter form the Yajur Veda; and the Isopanishad; not to speak of scores of passages from other Upanishads and the Bhagavad-Gita. Among several anecdotes about devotees and Avataras, are included those of Andal, Chaitanya, Madhwacharya, Vedanta-Desikacharya, Sri Raghavendra, Karaikkal Ammaiyar, Sambandar, Bhaskara Raya and Kannappa Nayanar. Among philosophical schools, those of Sankara and Ramanuja are presented-the former in greater detail-with an emphasis on the thought process propounded by Sri Aurobindo. There is further, a long list of standard questions for which answers have been identified. All discussions spiral gradually from the rock bottom level to the highly technical. The general reader may start at his own level. Whatever the level, the result is likely to be a fruitful and holistic understanding of the complex fabric of Hinduism. Printed Pages: 476.
