In the discussion regarding the progress of democratization and the evaluation of countries based on a democratic index, “little experiences” of democracy are often overlooked. This record synthesizes the democratic experiences from India, Brazil, and South Africa by looking at democratic accountability from the perspectives of intermediaries, organizations, associations, and citizen leaders who prepare, support, and facilitate citizen action. Based on seven case studies from the three countries, it also delves deeper into the complexities of participation, forms of intermediation, interface between citizens and state, dilemmas of citizen leaders, and extent of impact on citizens’ lives. This book would be valuable to researchers, students, development practitioners, government officers, community-based organizations, and donor agencies.

Review:

"The case studies presented in this volume provide an insightful and inspirational glimpse at the future of citizenship. Not only researchers and academics, but anyone with an interest in 'deepening democracy' will benefit from the fascinating experiences of citizen innovation from India, Brazil and South Africa that are shared in this book." —Carmen Malena, part-time Director, World Alliance for Citizen Participation

"This is an extremely important account of the interface between citizens and institutions that serve them, within the context of democratic accountability. Aside from all the lessons captured in the case studies is the overarching reality that citizens' involvement is key in building societies that are accountable and respect rights. I recommend this volume to anyone seeking to promote citizen leadership!"  —Ezra Mbogori, former head, MWENGO

"The case studies from India, Brazil and South Africa in this volume showcase the potential of organization of the urban poor working with civil society, exploring interactions with the government for solving urban problems." —Sheela Patel, executive director, SPARC International, Inc.

"In much of the recent theorising and debate on deepening democracy, the role of grassroots leaders has been far too neglected. This book, drawing case studies from the democracies of Brazil, India, and South Africa, goes a long way to help remedy this gap. And its insights are important, not just for these countries, but for citizen-led action everywhere."  —Prof. John Gaventa, fellow, Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex
