The rural non-farm sector is a vital component of an economy which accounts for a larger proportion of total rural employment and income. In fact, rural non-farm activities are becoming the growth engines of rural development and in turn, providing solution to the problems of poverty and un-employment. In this book, an attempt has been made to examine the contribution of the non-farm sector across different segments of rural households. The analysis indicates that non-farm income accounts for a significant proportion of household income in rural India with considerable variation across different income groups. The research suggests that the policy makers seeking to maximise the impact of an expanding non-farm sector on rural poverty and unemployment should concentrate on micro dimensions related to non-farm employability, as well as efforts should be focused on removing the barriers to the entry of the poor into the non-farm sector. The book has been organized into six Chapters. Chapter-I is the introductory chapter. Chapter-II is devoted to the thematic review of the existing body of literature to identify the research gap. Chapter-III deals with the methodological framework. Chapter-IV is mainly confined to causal factor analysis based on regression techniques. Chapter-V deals with summary of the findings of the study. Chapter-VI is devoted to the problems identified and the suggestions emerged in the form of policy prescriptions for the rural non-farm sector.
