This volume deals with the turbulent period at Bareilly and its environs between 1857 and early 1859. It brings out the narrative of a Bengali clerk posted at Bareilly since late 1856 who wrote his Memoir in Bengali in 1892-93 describing his sufferings and adventures during the mutiny till he joined the English at Naini Tal. Besides organizing their cavalry, he participated in the battles of Charpura and Bareilly in 1858. His pro-English narrative, marked by his anti-Muslim attitude, has been compared here with those of the contemporary English documents not only to determine the veracity of his statements but also to reconstruct the events at Barely and its environs. Attempts have been made to ascertain the vision of the rebels, their administrative structure and the contradictions in their organization.
