The emergence of the New Woman is a global phenomenon. The role of woman in Indian society can be visualized as a prolonged conflict between her traditional and assertive image.
The woman in the twentieth century reviews the portion assigned to her in sociocultural milieu. Indian Writing in English seeks to restructure and redefine woman's role in a more realistic and beloved manner. Presenting woman neither as goddess nor a whore but as an individual. However, the present century has witnessed a change in the affairs of woman. The feminist movement of first- half of the century and its revival in the second half of the century has been partly responsible for womans increasing awareness regarding their status in the society. Thus, the present century through literature has been a witness, the change in the social status of woman and her recognition of individual identity, capability and power. Therefore, this book provides a forum for exploring Changing Faces of New Woman from various perspectives in the context of Indian Writing in English. This anthology would serve various purposes of critics and student engaged in research.
