Several scholars in North America felt that Nehru's birth centennial must be used as an opportunity for an objective review of his contribution to India and the world. It was felt tht the quarter century since his death had provided a sufficient distance in time to assess his achievements and legacy and examine the relevance of his thoughts to our own times. Two conferences were held in the United States, one at the Queens College of the City University of New York and the other at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Scholars from India, Great Britain, Canada and the United States read papers. The editors of this volume served as Co-Directors of the two conferences.
