Book Description Project of History of Indian Science, Philosophy and Culture/MRML, 2012. Hardcover. Condition: New. Reprint. 532pp. The volumes of the Project of the History of Indian Science, Philosophy and Culture [PHISPC] aim at discovering the main aspects of Indias heritage and present them in an interrelated way. These volumes, in spite of their unitary look, recognize the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The Project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers who are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. In fact, contributions are made by different scholars with different ideological persuasions and methodological approaches. The project is marked by what may be called methodological pluralism. In spite of its primary historical character, this Project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by many scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization like India. Consciousness, Indian Psychology and Yoga is one of a set of four volumes purported to launch the sub-project Consciousness, Science, Society, Value and Yoga [CONSSAVY], which is an extension of the PHISPC. Devoted to the exploration of consciousness, this volume is part of an on-going effort to bring the Indic tradition and the social sciences closer together. Its focus is on three major contributions : a deep and many-faceted understanding of consciousness, a well-worked out methodology to arrive at reliable knowledge of the subject domain, and a variety of effective methods to transcend and transform human nature. Just as western science has used physical technology to increase our knowledge and power in the physical domain, so the Indic tradition has used yoga to create an immense wealth of insight and wisdom in the psychological domain. The five sections of this book deal with : the central role of consciousness in Indian psychology; different paths of Yoga; the coming together of Indian and Western systems of psychological thought; Indian approaches to core issues of theoretical psychology; and finally, Indian contributions to various aspects of applied psychology, which range from physical health to sustainable development, management and psychotherapy. Book Description Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, India, 2004. Hard Cover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. First Edition. The volumes of the PROJECT ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURE IN INDIAN CIVILIZATION aim at discovering the main aspects of India's heritage and present them in an interrelated way. These volumes, in spite of their unitary look, recognise the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The Project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers whore are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. In fact contributions are made by different scholars with different ideological persuasions and methodological approaches. The Project is marked by what may be called 'methodological pluralism'. In spite of its primary historical character, this Project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by many scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization like India. In tune with the Volume published or contemplated, under the PHISPC, which aim at presenting India's multi-faceted heritage in an interrelated manner, this Volume too tries to throw light on the varied, but integrated, thought-structures pertaining to the physical world. The intellectual endeavours of Indian savants, both orthodox and heterodox, encompassed not only the attempts to find out the 'essence' behind all manifestations, but also the problems of substance, qualities and motion; atomism; space and time; heat and light. Some epistemological attempts too were made with a view to seeking the rationality or the validity of their knowledge. Such knowledge, however, was an integral part of a holistic vision of Man in Nature and in recognition of the consonance between microcosm and macrocosm.Printed Pages: 458. Size: 23 Cms x 29 Cms.
