John Mowat was born in 1941 in Los Angeles of British parents but completed his education in Britain. After a short career in journalism, he graduated from the University of Wales, Bangor, and did research on Joseph Conrad under Tony Tanner at King s College, Cambridge. The majority of his career was as a lecturer in American Studies at the University of Hull where he pioneered film studies with a course on John Huston. Mowat has published articles on Saul Bellow, Anthony Burgess and James Joyce as well as a great deal of poetry in small magazines. He is married to a school administrator and they have three daughters. They have a home in Cornwall but for the last three years they have been living in Bangkok and then Delhi.
