Published in 2009 in India. "To explore the world is a passion that consumes many lives, an obsession one is powerless to control. To deny it increases its attraction, to embrace it breeds one's love all the more. I was blessed with such an affliction from an early age. I had no choice but to face an ambition that would challenge me, both physically and mentally, more than anything I had previously undertaken. The thought had been there for years but reservations had always condemned it to the depths of impracticality. Cycling from my home in the peaceful countryside of Kerry, Ireland, to the untamed metropolis of New Delhi, India, would commit me to testing the limits of my endurance and strength of will. The inspiration for my travelling began with my mother but was driven by the words of Ireland's greatest ever adventurer, Dervla Murphy, the epitome of Irish humility. It was during the winter of 1963 that Ms Murphy's dream of cycling from Ireland to India was realised, and forty five years later this dream still inspires the world's craving for understanding and exploration. (...) The planning and preparation for the trip was intentionally minimal and I set off at the end of December with myriad emotions competing for supremacy. Apprehension I know is only natural when confronting the unknown, yet by being unperturbed you cannot help but become exhilarated by your own daring. To shun an experience because of fear is a fatal flaw that condemns people to a self absorbed, banal life of routine. I dispelled my inhibitions and decided to cycle to India."
