The extraordinary people from Oswiecim (Auschwitz) who are the subject of this publication came from the city and the surrounding area. During the Second World War, while themselves suffering prosecution, ethnic cleansing, and the constant threat of imprisonment, they used every means at their disposal to acquire food and medicines for the prisoners in the Nazi German Auschwitz camp. They risked their lives to deliver these supplies, pass on clandestine correspondence, and organize escapes. The Germans arrested many of them for these deeds, and many of them died. After the war, little was said about their heroism. For years, they were almost forgotten.
