While the papers in this volume represent a wide range of research interests and critical approaches, all the authors focus on travel towards, within, or away from North America. Some treat the notion of movement more figuratively than others, exploring movement in time as well as space, making forays into history. Together, they demonstrate that national, class, racialized, gendered, and sexualized subjects are constituted on the road. Even a cursory reading of these papers brings home the fact that while for some travel is a matter of exigency, for others it is a privilege. The journeys discussed here range from enjoyable, edifying, or liberating to joyless, disturbing, or even tragic. North America is sometimes figured as a place to run to; elsewhere it is a place to run from in search of alternative lifestyles and value systems.
